in " Chivalry” simply by Neil Gaiman

In Neil Gaiman's brief story " Chivalry”, an elderly girl finds and buys the Holy Grail in a thrift store to use this as a ornamental element in her house. Simultaneously, a knight from the Rounded Table with the quest of actually finding this sacred object of God. This short account contains many elements of relationship, such as the spiritual quest, love and experience and courtly and chivalric life. By modernizing romance, Gaiman shows that love and loyalty are important values even in today's world, that courtly and chivalric life remain alive in one way and that, unfortunately, faith based quest is usually not as much respected as it accustomed to be. Gaiman does this by making use of literary factors such as symbolism, allusion, characterization and paradox. Love and loyalty will be embraced in romance and in today many people's lives. In " Chivalry”, Mrs. Whitaker lives by all of them because she has very devoted to her overdue husband, Holly. When Galaad offers to Mrs. Whitaker the Apple of Lifestyle which can regain beauty and grant timeless life, the lady pictures their self young, amazing and very appealing to man. Just after this your woman goes to her parlor and looks at a " image of her late husband Henry, cheerful and eating ice cream” (Gaiman, 44) and when the lady comes back your woman refuses Galaad gift because Mrs. Whitaker realizes that she had already resided her life and that your woman had a guy who loved her to which she decides to remain faithful. Mrs. Whitaker is also a fan of Mills and Boon relationship books which she acquires at the thrift store and although the girl never manages to read them, Mrs. Whitaker grants particular importance to those books. With names such as " Her Thundering Soul”, " Her Turbulent Heart”, " Her Majestic Passion” and " Her Unique Love”, all those books apparently represent how Mrs. Whitaker feels in her existence and the appreciate that she gets for her spouse, and the reason they are so appealing is really because they keep those feelings of love...
